Merthyr Council looks set to climb down on plans to introduce a charge on the High Street Car park. The car park - which serves the shops near the fountain - is currently free for up to half an hour, but the council passed plans in February to introduce a 20p charges. Merthyr Lib Dems worked with local shopkeepers to campaign against the charge.
Merthyr Tydfil Liberal Democrats have voted against plans to close local sixth forms. The plan was pushed through by Labour and Independent councillors, despite a potential £20m hole in the funding.
The council's new business rate relief scheme could be far more ambitious. Local Lib Dems called for the scheme to be increased to help more struggling local businesses, after the council committed just £2,000 to help keep people in their jobs.
