87% in Merthyr say 'Scrap the Council Tax!'

Mike German AM and the Merthyr Tydfil Liberal Democrats held a popular referendum in the town centre on Saturday.

Over 300 people took part and 87% voted to abolish Council Tax.

  • A Liberal Democrat Government will abolish council tax within 3 years

  • Liberal Democrats would replace Council tax with a local income tax, related to people's ability to pay

  • With local income tax more financial power is devolved to Councils

Local campaigner Ceirion Rees said, "Local referendums are a great idea, they get people thinking about the inequalities of the Council tax and are a great campaigning tool."
