Mike German and Local Residents say "Sort out the Roundabout"

12.00.00am GMT Tue 10th Jan 2006

Mike German AM visited Merthyr to lend his support to a local campaign to get Merthyr Tydfil Council to address traffic problems at the roundabout outside Tesco.

More than 300 people have signed a petition asking Merthyr Council to sort out the congestion in the vicinity of the Tescos supermarket. Local Liberal Democrat Amy Kitcher who has been organising the campaign said: "Anyone who lives in the Twyn area or uses Twyn Hill on a regular basis will be well aware of the trouble this roundabout has been causing to local motorists. It isn't unusual to have to queue for ten or fifteen minutes before managing to get onto the roundabout. You expect this kind of congestion in a city, but not in a town like Merthyr."

Assembly Member for South Wales East, Mike German commented: "This is a classic case of a new development supported by old infrastructure. The Council should have anticipated the problems at the planning stage, but they didn't. With more and more cars on the road the problem is only going to get worse. The Council should listen to the voice of local residents and take action to improve the traffic flow."

Amy Kitcher, who lives in Twynyrodyn, said: "We have consulted with a Highways Designer and he told us what the Council needs to do in order to sort out the roundabout. The good news is that a few simple alterations are all that are needed to get the traffic moving more freely. However, the question remains - will Merthyr Council listen to us? We intend to submit the petition in the next few weeks, but the more signatures we get in the meantime the better."
