Threat to our Post Offices

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 17th Sep 2007

The Labour government have announced plans to close down another 2500 Post Offices across the country. The new closures come on top of the 4,000 that have already closed under Labour and 3,500 that were axed by the previous Tory government.

No lists of branches to be closed have yet been published but we will keep you fully informed on the website of any attempts to close any Post Offices in Merthyr Tydfil

Lib Dem Campaigner, Amy Kitcer said, "In the last round of closures, three years ago, Merthyr lost 5 Post Offices. When a branch closes it is the local community that suffers. Elderly people especially rely on their local Post Office, why should they have to travel up to the town centre to access this vital service? It's just not fair.

"It's easy for the government to forget the human cost of the decisions they make. I spoke to a 91 year old lady the other day who told me that she only leaves her house once a week to go up to the Post Office. If her local branch closes she doesn't know what she will do.

"A Post office is more than just a place to buy a few stamps, for many it is the heart of our community".
