Liberal Democrats ready for government12.39.25pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 22nd Sep 2009
Local members from Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney Liberal Democrats have been getting ready for the general election at the Liberal Democrat Conference. The Lib Dems have been debating their plans for the country ahead of the next general election. Lib Dem spokesperson for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, Amy Kitcher, said, "I am proud to be in a party which still openly discusses our plans for government at our conference. These are difficult times for our country, and we must be frank with the voters. I believe our honest plans are the best way to drive the country out of recession." The Liberal Democrats are the only challengers to Labour in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney. Amy has been talking to key party figures about how their plans will help our valleys communities. Amy added, "I have spoken to Nick Clegg about our area this week. I know that he will always put the needs of ordinary people first. He told me how he is committed to scrapping income tax completely for people earning the minimum wage. Only the Liberal Democrats will put the needs of working families ahead of millionaires and bankers." New local member, Rhys Jones, spoke at the conference. He said, "I am delighted I have joined the Lib Dems. They are clearly the only party willing to deliver the change communities like ours need."
